My XP install failed ("krnl386.exe not found") after it did the copy of my Windows 98 files that it wanted to replace. My machine is still in Fat 32 format and I have a Win 98 boot disk that will boot my old box. I have a backup copy of my c:\Windows directory. How do I uncompress the files that the failed XP saved so I can get back to Win 98? I've given up on XP on this machine. I tried a few things listed on MS Knowledge Base without success. I think that I'll need to run some kind of uncompress/uninstall program from the Windows XP CD but I have I not idea what? The Windows 98 C:\windows\system32\osuninstall.exe didn't work because it wasn't found.

MS Tech Support helped me hand copy XP to the machine and we also got that to boot under XP I can't unintall XP. If I boot with XP and try to uninstall, Win XP always produces the message "Setup cannot uninstall because the necessay registration info is missing. I did register.

The Gory Details:

I tried to upgrade a Windows 98 machine to XP after I downloaded the latest drivers and passed the on-line Upgrade Advisor compatibility with XP check. Bottom line it failed and MS reported weeks latter that the problem because I used a well know "Ghost" program to upgrade my HD my machine a couple of years ago. Something about 98 not caring about some drive setting that XP now expected.
