I have XP HOME on a toshiba satellite laptop. It worked great for about a year. Then windows started to freeze. It would freeze on startup. It would load the welcome screen but when you clicked on the name it would only load the background image of the desktop. It only does this two out of three times. I reformated about 3 months ago to try to solve this problem (i thought it was a virius). But it has started to do the same thing again. Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix my problem permenatly

It could be a bad hard drive or a memory issue. Is the computer completely virus/spyware free and updated?

I would run memtest on the system for at least 24 hours to ensure the memory is working well.
It could be a power supply issue, which may translate into a power cord or power cord connection replacement.

I agree with Birdpup, run a memory for a length of time to see if heat is causing a failure, or if it fails under workload. Have you ran any scan disk tests on the drive? The drive itself can be workable, and still have bad sectors which is an indicator that the drive will fail eventually.

Hope this helps you.
