XP Home Ed - NTFS Permissions

In short:

- Had XP Home on a machine running NTFS and it decided to make personal files for the user account private
- Boot files went tits up and corrupted, tried to recover but ended up having to re-install XP Home over the top again
- New fresh copy of XP Home obviously returns an 'access denied' error when trying to access personal files

Problem - Normal way of claiming ownership of the folder(s) in XP Pro, obviously can't be done in XP Home (that I know of?) because of a lack of 'Advanced' security options.

My question - How can I get access to said folders / files?

Hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Go in to My Computer
Click on Tools -> Folder Options -> View and uncheck Use simple file sharing (It's the last check box)
Then you should see the Security tab you're looking for and you'll be able to take ownership of files/folders.

I appreciate your attempt at helping but that option doesn't exist in XP Home ;)

Found the solution anyhow, apparently you can change NTFS permissions on the administrator account if you boot into safe mode with XP Home..

Cheers anyway :)

You know... I knew that, if I would have paid closer attention to the Home part I wouldn't have posted it.

Was going to recommend the safe mode part next if you didn't figure it out on your own. Just keep in mind that works great for local stuff, but don't try to add network users in Safe Mode and share the folder because XP gets all confused. ;)
