XP heartbeat and other nasties

Using taskmgr I notice 2% CPU usage every second or so. Under processes there is no usage shown on any process. What is this heartbeat? I've tried shutting down all unnecessary services but it's still there. Is taskmgr causing it? Is there a better process viewer (aka top) that would let me find out?

The other thing is explorer keeps gaining page faults every second. What's causing this and is it normal?

Thanks,

Jason

PS Are there any other XP anomalies anyone has noticed?

Dont worry about it. unless you have an a slow pc this is just fine..actually even with a slow pc its fine..u cant do anything about that.
the pc has to run on so cpu power..dosent it...

Task manager, as someone else said, must consume CPU cycles to update its display.

*Some* process has to be charged with the CPU usage.

If it really is happening once a second (which I kind of doubt, since task manager's resolution is about one second), I suppose it could be the balance set manager, which runs as part of the System process and is called every second.

But it seems to me you're worrying over an operating system that is functioning correctly.
