problem solved..sort of. Well after weeks of thrashing around the cmos and bios I got the thing to find the HD and do a clean install of xp..I did it be disabling ACPI function in the Power Mgmnt.Setup..it then stalled at aprox.27% loading and a dialog box appears and indicates driver.cab won't load. Dang..so I rumaged around the net and found a post that indicated the same prob.and resolved it by making the cd rom the primary slave..so I configured that and it took off and loaded completly. It now loads to a desktop but would freeze up with 1gig or ram installed..I removed one stick which leaves me wit 512meg stick and a 256 meg stick installed and now seems stable. And yet to reconnect my internal 100 meg zip. So my primary master is the HD..the pri.slave is the cd rom and on IDE2 I'll end up wit my cdrw as secondary master and the zip as the #2slave when the zip is connected. From time to time I notice the HD light flickering for no reason..in my slot 1Athlon 950's which clean installed much easier then the xp2400+ M7VIF mob...the drive light only flickers when the comp.is in use..so I don't understand what's going on wit the intermit.flickering drive light in the xp2400 box. (xp clean install)..I tried returning ACPI back to enabled and xp fails to load..the comp.does post but that's it. So with ACPI disabled I have to do a manual push the button shutdown after xp indicates it's safe to shut off the computer. So any thoughts on why the syst.is goofy with 1gig ram and only works with ACPI disabled.. ..forgot to mention..I'am working with Known good ram..It's the same ram that was in the box wit w98se installed..and worked just fine..so I'm wondering if there's a mem setting in bios somewhere I need to fiddle wit..hope somebody has some ideas on all this..thanks in advance.
