XP hates my PS/2 items

I have a PS/2 keyboard and a Logitech Trackman Marble Wheel that's USB but has a USB/PS2 adapter. If I use the keyboard and mouse plugged into the PS/2 ports, XP won't use them. When I looked at the keyboard in Control Panel, it says the device couldn't start, Code 10. I'm assuming it's the same for the mouse.

The only time XP was able to use the PS/2 board was when I also had the USB board plugged in. After I shut down my computer, I unplugged the USB devices and plugged the mouse and keyboard into their PS/2 ports, once again XP fails to use them.

Is this a known problem with XP? I have the mouse's Logitech driver installed, but nothing special for the keyboard. I don't want to use them on the USB ports because I have other USB devices. I did recently flash my BIOS to its latest version to prepare for the install. Could that have caused this?

I tried to update the driver with the setup CD, but it said no new drivers are available. I installed the right drivers for the mouse, but the system still won't locate it on the mouse port, only USB. The keyboard is made by a company called Silitek and I couldn't see a model # on it. I tried going to the Silitek website, but it seems to be no longer there. I thought the generic Windows driver would work with all keyboards. Any idea where I can find a keyboard driver?

I found the software for my keyboard and installed it on my computer. Then I rebooted and now the keyboard works. However when I look at in Device Manager, it still lists the MS driver as the driver for my keyboard. Shouldn't the Silitek software be listed as the driver? Also I booted up another time and the PS/2 keyboard did work, so I shut down the computer, disconnected the USB keyboard and turned back on and then the PS/2 no longer functioned. Now I'm afraid that if I shut down my computer and disconnect the USB keyboard that my PS/2 keyboard will cease to function again. Is this unfounded?

No SP1 was the install. This was a Windows XP Pro SP1 CD. I've decided to just use a USB keyboard since it's so hell-bent on it. It seems to like USB stuff real well.

I seem to remember seeing an article in the MS KB about if you installed XP without PS/2 devices your PS/2 ports wouldn't work afterwards. Of course I can't find it now. I've also seen problems like this where the PS/2 ports were starting to fail. Can you install a 2nd copy of XP or another OS like Linux to see if it is the ports themselves?

I don't have any other OS disks except my Win98 CD and I don't know enough about how everything works to risk trying a dual boot between them. My keyboard was attached when I installed XP in fact I used it to go through the setup. It started failing right after.

When you say the ports start to fail, do you mean they're physically deteriorating? This machine is only 2 years old and I've been very careful with it. The keyboard does work outside of Windows, it's only when I'm in Windows that it fails.

When I said failing PS/2 ports I didn't mean physical damage to them. I've seen where the ports themselves stop working like not recognizing devices. If you can't install another OS what about going into the BIOS? Does the keyboard always work in the BIOS?

My friend had a Asus P3B-F board where the PS/2 ports started working intermittently and then after about 2 months just stopped working all together. This could be what is happening.

Yes the PS/2 keyboard does work in the BIOS and when I boot up with the keyboard attached, XP lists it as there, but unable to start, Code 10.
