XP Game Controller App Major Problems

I have WinXP Pro installed on my system and have always had numerous problems with the game controller app. It does not open instantaneously, it takes anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute or so to open, then initially is non-functional, sometimes becomes functional then goes disfunctional when attempting to do anything in it, sometimes locks up the control panel app, and is just miserable to use. Sometimes you can get it to identify and test your controller, but even when doing this, it stops for many seconds, starts to work again, then might lock temporarily, and sometimes locks up hard. I really don't understand it. My son has an Intel system with XP Pro and his seems to run the app fine. My system is: MSI KT266A Via chipset motherboard, 512 DDR Memory, ATI Radeon 8500, SB Audigy, Promise IDE RAID controller, 3COM NIC, 2 Seagate HDDs, Zip 250 IDE, Teac CDRW, Pioneer DVD drive, and Supra Modem. The app acts like this whether there are any controllers plugged in or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Other than this quirk, the system seems to run great.

I'm not sure if you have the same problem, but I had similar problems with my computer games after installing the new ATI Radeon 8500 graphics card. Even though it was a brand new graphics card, the driver badly needed replacing. So, I went to ATI Technologies web site and downloaded and installed their latest driver, number 6.13.3276. This latest driver is dated Oct 15, 2001. After replacing the driver, all of my games worked great.
I'm not sure if you have the same problems, so it won't hurt to at least check it out. Good luck and let us know what happens. I know how it feels not to have your favorite games working right. This would at least be a good place to start in looking for a solution.

It is the control panel app. the one that comes with XP and allows you to set up your controllers. It really is almost totally useless on my system. It appears that the couple of controllers I have work in the games, but you cannot really set them up efficiently using the control panel app, as it acts like I described in my first post. Thanks for your interest though and if you have any other ideas, I would be happy to hear them.
