I did clean install and turned off system restore at first boot - I don't like it - I want to ghost this thing - no way shoud it have to be 2.3 gig with no programs and "system restore" off - should it?? Am I missing something - shouldn't XP be around 1 gig or less on fresh install?

thanks

that 2.3 gig sound high for me... im not saying u did something wrong but... u sure it was a fresh install?? hmm.. mine is under a gig when XP boots.. then considering that u install MS Office stuff etc... 2.3 is little too high...

If you have alot of ram that is actually normal. All that extra space comes from 2 places

1. The pagefile widows sets by default is 1.5 times you phisical ram so if you have 512 MB ram (like me) windows will give you a 768MB! pagefile. I have mine set to like 32 MB.

2. The hibernation file. Its that sleep function where the ram is cached to disk so it can go in a comma like state. The hibernation file is the size of your ram. Turn this off nobody uses it.

So if you have 512MB of ram windows gives you 1.25 gigs of extra crap.

I put my page file in another partition to keep my xp partition size to less than 1.6gb its just enough to fit in 1 cdr for ghosting (dont want to deal with spanning)

a fresh install was around 1.3 to 1.4gb
I have system restore and hibernation turned off

peace

you can also turn off the page file then ghost and then turn it back on

peace

I do indeed have 512 memory - I did completely turn off paging and that reduced my size substantially - in addition I believe programs are loading faster

thanks for all the good suggestions
