XP freezes involving cd drive

Everytime I insert a blank CD (and sometimes written) it completely freezes, no CTR ALT DEL, no anything. Sometimes I can insert written CDs and DVD s and it will read it but with signifficant lag. If I click on any of the device in device manager it also causes a freeze. I checked for resource conflicts and it shows some but I believe they are devices that can share the same IRQs. What can I do?

is this WITH the afore mentioned disk in the drive ? try turning off "auto insert" for the CD-rom. make sure that you get ALL the auto settings turned off.

is it always the same drive ? does it matter ?

Is the OS setup as a Multi-Processor system?
Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ System \ Device Manager \ Computer

Is the modem an internal WinModem?

It is a Dual processor system. What could be the problem?
