XP Firewire trouble with DVD burner and HD

Hi there,

I'm after some suggestions for sorting out a problem with my laptop firewire connection. I have a fujitsu-siemens S-5582, it's a nice little beast, PIII 800, 256Megs ram. All its firmware and drivers are up to date. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 with all updates installed.
I have tried my HP dvd 200e external DVD burner with mixed results. I can read data from a disc (CD or DVD)with no problem. But when recording to it - i.e burning a Disc, it will lock up and fail, causing a Blue screen crash with no mercy. There is no set time period for this lock up - it seems random. The writing will begin for a time, and then BAM, out to the Blue screen. It doesn't matter either if I'm using Nero or the software that came with the burner. Note, the burner works using a USB connection.

The same happens with an external Hard drive, fine by USB, bad by firewire (on a write operation).

The Blue Screen crash doesn't mention any drivers or modules, it just gives hex addresses (which I have noted down for anyone who wants to have a look).

I have been tp HP support, Fujitsu-Siemens support, I've trawled many forums, been to Microsoft.......no good so far. I'm beginning to think it might be to do with the XP driver sbp2port.sys (because of a few MS pages that mentioned other 'similar' problems with it)

Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, I'm sitting waiting for XP service pack 2.

Couple of thoughts/questions:

Is the FireWire integrated? If an add-on, could be a driver compatibilty issue.

Is the FireWire component and the DVD burner XP compatible? (there's a free check tool on Microsoft.com)

Do you have any friends that have Firewire so you can try your burner on?


As a near-last effort... do a bare setup. 1 HD, DVD burner, 1 stick of ram, no add-on cards.....fresh build of OS (no updates either).
...try buring a DVD....same result? If you can burn...then you're having a software issue....if you still can't burn apply 1 update at a time related to the problem....if still doesn't work you're pretty much SOL as its likely a HW compatiblility issue.
