This is the third time in as many months I've tried using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP SP2 and it never works. It seems to create the backup alright, but when I attempt to restore the files and settings on the new computer, the Wizard always complains 'this location does not contain backup data' or something to that effect.

I am using an external USB2.0 2.5" hard drive to store the data, to which I have the Wizard backup directly. There is a folder named USMT2.UNC which contains two files; IMG00001.DAT and STATUS (no file extension). The .DAT file is a few hundred megabytes, and the STATUS file is 1KB. I have tried pointing the Wizard to the disk volume/letter, the USMT2.UNC folder, or its contents. Same result.

Both computers have the same OS and all available updates (including the update to Files and Settings Transfer Wizard). I perform a 'custom' backup because there is no need to transfer half the things the default settings will backup (e.g. file associations).

Has anyone ever gotten this POS to work? Its a good thing I manually backed up all the data as an extra precaution. Had I relied only on this POS, I would have lost all data on these systems.
