This is the strangest networking problem I have ever seen. I have a Belkin N router with my winXP desktop attached to it via a wn311b netgear N PCI card. The router is connected by cat 5 to a win2003 server. Router is connected to an ADSL2+ netopia router that is bridged.
In trying to backup my desktop's files to the server by opening up \\server and dragging and dropping, the connection top outs around 200K/s on my LAN! If I go in reverse by copying files TO my desktop, it is 1-3M/s. If I go down to the server and copy files FROM my desktop it is 1-3M/s. If I ultraVNC from my desktop into my server and use ultraVNC to upload or download, it is 1-3M/s. But if I try to drag files from my desktop to the server, it drops to 200-300k/s.
Interestingly, this appears to be tied to the adapter's (or my desktop's) current download activity because if I am running uTorrent or even speakeasy.com speedtest, the UPLOAD rate of a batch transfer from the desktop to the server shoots up from a stable 200k/s to 1-3M/s.
I have uPNP enabled; the windows firewall is configured properly I believe. Does anyone have any idea of where to start troubleshooting this? It is so strange I doubt anyone even believes me LOL.
Thanks,
Marshall
