I'm setting up 190 PC's using WinXP running on a Novell 5.1 network. There are two basic accounts, a teacher account and a student account needed. Everything runs fine logged in with Admin Priv. but I obviously can't set up the teachers nor the students with these rights. Both Netscape and Eudora crap out at launch with an error. I have tried giving the teachers temp Admin status to point to the folder, then setting them back to a Limited User on the next login, but as soon as they access those two programs with the Limited Account, the error msg returns. Sorry if I haven't given enough details but I am stumped and have no formal XP or NT training at ALL ! TIA fellas

Can you give us the exact wording of the error message(s)?

What may be happening is that the user accounts do not have permission to write, read and/or modify the folders where Netscape and Eudora store their working files. For example, the mail store under Eudora or the folder where Netscape caches temporary files from the web. I'm really new at XP and security and permissions so I could be wrong about this being the cause of your problem but it sounds like the same thing I ran into after creating an account for my daughter and she suddenly couldn't play her games anymore. I had to give her permission to modify the files in the game folders themselves.

I hope this helps..

I'm going on a huntch...

Another thing could be that the error message happens because there is no search drive to the netscape and eudora.

In the novell login script type in S1= PATH WHERE FOLDER FOR THE PROGRAM IS

the path will be like C:\Program Files\Netscape

If the teachers and the students accounts are in separate containers, be sure to put that search drive in the container login script. If they have separate profiles, but put it in the profile login script.

The exact error message is: An unhandled exception has occured in Eudora. It then prepares to send the results to MS 🙁 and creates an appcompat.txt file. I have searched the folder where it copies this text file but it apparently doesn't have the path or rights to even do this ! Again, it works fine using my Admin Equiv. account, so it has to be a rights or path problem. If I find a created appcompat.txt file, I will post it in the thread.

What folder does Eudora keep its mail store in? Go to that folder, right click it, select properties and go to the security tab. Give the user(s) read & write permission for the folder and try again.

Thanks for the assist MrMilney. I had to backtrack a bit due to the security I had set up on the PC. I disabled right clicking and somehow removed the security tab from the properties ( I'm still researching the security tab issue, but I KNOW its in my pile of notes somewhere.

A further experiment resulted in another error, but it looks like a file permission problem. The error reads:
Could not open file C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\data\descmap.pce for reading.
Cause: Permission denied, file may be marked as read only or locked.

I could only get it to even get this far after deleting the teacher account that I used to access (but not install) Eudora. Novell has the option to make the account volatile, meaning it is removed from the PC at shutdown, so we may have to do this to fix the problem.
