i never really cared about this, i mean, it's easy enough to flick the switch and turn it off. but someone asked me about it so i thought i'd find out...

for some machines, if you shutdown in XP, the computer will automatically turn off. for others, it will give you the usual "it is now safe to turn off your computer" message.

my question is, how do you enable an automatic shutdown?

intriguing, because, on my P-II, i reformatted and installed XP. whereas previously, win2k would automatically turn off the machine, after reformat and reinstall of XP, i always got the "safe to turn off computer" message. additionally, the other OS on the system, Red Hat, would shut off the computer if i invoke the "shutdown" command.

so there must be something in the OS that enables this. does anyone know?

thanks!
