XP does not recognise my 2001fp. Why?

XP Pro SP 2 recognises my new DELL 2001fp as a Plug and Play Monitor.

Why isn't it identified as a DELL 2001fp?

My 1901fp which is now my secondary monitor is properly identified as a DELL 1901fp.

It just means that the drivers for the 1901fp are in your version of windows, while the 2001fp doesn't have specific drivers for that model. It will still work fine and shouldn't give any problems.

If it really bugs you, you should be able to get official drivers for the monitor (very small file, around 100k) from the Dell website.

In the greater scheme of things, it doesn't matter...

But yeah, that's just saying your PC doesn't know what monitor it is. There shouldn't be any loss without the drivers IMO.

All the drivers seem to to do it make it say Dell 2001FP instead of plug an play, at any rate you need to dled the drives from dell or get them off the CD that it should have come with...

Problem is resolved. I found the driver on DELL web site.

the driver was also on the CD included in the box.

but, of course, it doesn't really matter at all.

I searched the CD before I posted but did not find any driver.

As you say it doesn't matter now but, for my personal education, I would like to know where the driver is on the CD.

i'll have it in about 30 minutes (don't have the cd with me right now)

for the 2005 it is [cd rom drive]:\2005fpw.inf
for the 2001 i'd imagine it is in [cd rom drive]:\2001fp.inf

the readme.txt should explain that

If it is like other monitors, the word 'drivers' is sort of a misnomer. Monitors also use an INF that tells the OS what it supports. The chipset 'drivers' for Intel are the same way. It doesn't matter when it comes to load time and you get a new OEMxx.inf. Yippee (said with a very bored, wonder if I watered the lawn voice).

So next, time, remember that you are looking for an inf and it should make your life easier (and it will have a .cat file).

I already knew I had to look for an .INF file. That is what I was looking for when I searched on the CD before my first post.

Problem is I do not see any such file on my CD (nor any .CAT file)

Cool. Lots of folks don't and start looking for a EXE. Glad you know more. If you are really board, you can edit it and look at the info. There is a help file buried in the OS DDK on the inf format and headers. Much of it will start being replaced in Vista with XML files.
