xp does not boot with new mobo

i replaced the mobo, processor and memory but kept the old hard drive. put it all in a new case and all was well until i hit save and exit from the initial mobo setup page. i get a quick blue screen flash then a screen that says sorry dude but youre screwed. no sorry about the levity but the screen says windows had a problem and i get options to use boot normally, safe mode, with network and with command prompt. i cant even get the mobo utilities cd to load? yes i rechecked everything and had a static wrist strap on the whole time. any clues ?

You will have to do a clean/Repair install of windows. When you make a dramatic change like this windows may accept the changes if they are not to dramatic or it may stop working.

If you have problems getting the computer to boot from CD, press the F8 key during POST. This will bring up the motherboard's boot menu, and then you can select the optical drive from a list.

If your Windows XP CD-ROM does not have Service Pack 2 installed, you will especially want to take precautions to avoid worm infection. Here is more information: http://www.mechbgon.com/build/security1.html Scroll down to the first picture.

yeah i tried that already. i was not able to load the drivers that came with the mobo yet either? can i unplug the hard drive then reboot so i can get to the load the mobo cd step. my last build was a virgin build meaning everything was new. that went off without a hitch and i'm still using that pc for gaming on a regular basis. i will check out that site now. thanks mechBgon.

I wouldn't try hot-plugging your drives, nope. You're not supposed to need to load drivers, especially from a CD, when installing WinXP on a P4P800. Just boot straight from the WinXP CD and that's everything you should need.

BTW you want to follow these instructions, Method 2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/ Once WinXP is installed, immediately patch it with SP2 first thing, before installing any drivers. The next thing after SP2 is to reboot, then install your Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, reboot, then video drivers last.

i just found a post in the operating systems folder from dclive about just what i am doing, upgrading a mobo but keeping the old drive. should have read that first lol. it says to put the drive back in the old rig and and change the hdd setting to pci ide then turn it off and swap the drive back to the new mobo. this did work for a guy that did the same thing as me. i still know just enough to be dangerous lol. well off to try that and will post back after i am done. thanks
