When XP runs some programs (such as my son's games), it seems to run a program called "generic host process for Win32 services" (GHP) It also runs this when XP starts up. As far as I can tell this is what it is supposed to do.
BUT, this program (GHP) has started to dial the modem and connect to my ISP without being ask to. Everytime my son gets a game going, the modem dials out. It doesn't connect to any website; it just connects to the internet and gets IE going and sits there.
Sometimes out of the blue the modem connects to the Internet all on its own. I've disabled automatic updates of virus, XP, and anything else I could find in case one of these things has gone wacko. But still the problem continued.
I think I've been able to stop this by using ZoneAlarm: allowing this generic host process to run locally but not to link to internet. But it seems that sometimes the GHP is needed with some webpages and I'm unable to connect to a number of pages after doing this blocking with ZoneAlarm. If I shut down Zonealarm I'm able to connect to these sites.
I think this started after I installed an ethernet card. But I'm not entirely sure. I've removed the card, driver, and network connection but still the dialing out occurs.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? I've checked the MS Knowledge base and found nothing.
Is there some setting in XP that I can change to stop this automatic dialing out?
Help.
