XP desktop files disappeared

We recently installed software on our computer for our Logitech Universal Remote. The remote was not working properly so we uninstalled the software now all of our icons (folders we had files saved in) and a word document we had on our desktop is gone.

I have looked in the \Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop folder and it is empty. Also, when I right click on my desktop I don't have the Show Desktop Items item selection on that menu. Any idea what may have removed it or where I can find my missing desktop items?

I hope you have a restore point... I don't even know if that would work here, however. Its worth giving it a shot.

Tried a few restore points but each one comes back after the reboot and says 'cannot restore using this restore point at this time'.

Something's very fishy about this entire problem, though. I would suspect malware or trojan/virus at work.

Your system restore error message, if quoted accurately, does not appear to be a valid Microsoft message.
