Xp corrupting files on install

I Built my new system:

New Components:

Antec 350w PSU
xp 2500
Asus A7n8x newest revision
Ati 9600 pro
Buffalo PC 3200
Liton Burner

Old:

Maxtor 45gig HD 5400 RPM, has worked perfectly for 4 years.
8x DVD

1st attempt:
Put everything together. Powered up and installed windows from the DVD drive, did a quick format of the drive. Got into windows. Installed Zonealarm Pro. We have bad viruses on out school network and as soon as a computer is plugged into the network, it is infected. Installed nforce 2 drivers from Asus CD. Downloaded latest video drive........Problem......when windows goes to extract the fiel it says that it is corrupted. So I redownloaded and same message.

I then tried to update XP with serviece pack 1, it also gave me a corruption error.

2nd.

Reinstalled XP and formated NOT the quick format the drive. I installed from hte burner, during XP install when it is actually copying the files, it came with an error that it could not find a file. Upon retry t did not work.

3rd try:

Reinstalled Xp and formated NOT using the quick format from DVD drive. No problems so far. Got into windows, installd Zone Alarm, and the same corruption problems appeared.

So basically I cannot install anything, it tells me upon extraction that the file is corrupted??

I doubt this is my harddrive as it was working perfectly an hour before in my old computer.

I hope you're not using a pirated and burned copy of XP. Aside from the fact that that's illegal, a CD-R will also degrade over time, and could cause the corruption that you're seeing. If this is the case (and if not, forgive me for assuming, but it's hard not to when probably the majority of people here pirate their OS), then the solution is a real copy of Windows XP.

Otherwise, make sure you're not overclocking, and unplug the network cable while you're installing drivers and stuff (like Zonealarm). With the cable unplugged, you won't be able to get any viruses while you install stuff; you should install your network drivers (part of the nforce2 drivers, AFAIK) before you install ZoneAlarm (this might be a problem, since after it has been installed and set up, Zonealarm might not protect subsequently added "new" network interfaces).

It is a legal copy on a burned CD. Legal as in my company owns it.

I don't get any errors during installiontion of windows from the DVD drive? But you still think its the CD?

Do you think its because I am installing ZoneAlarm before anything else?

The corruption is only in files that I try to install. For example i tried to install a game, from a cd, it said that a file during installation was corrupt.

Also for example, I downloeded the new ATI 3.8 drivers a 25meg file. When I double click it, it goes to extract, upon extraction it says that it is corrupted.

Another important point. On the 3rd try. I installed Zonealarm before anything, and it also said that was corrupted. But I tried it again and it installed.

This could be a hardware issue. You mentioned that you installed the latest IDE drivers from ASUS. Perhaps there is an issue with the IDE controller on your motherboard. Do you have a PCI IDE controller card you could test?

Formatting (escpecially a quick format) will not always get rid of some viruses. What I would suggest is to do a low-level format of your hdd. This takes a few hours, but it should get rid of any remaining viruses. Since you have a Maxtor hdd, you can download MaxBlast for free, which will do the low-level format, partition your drive, and lots of other stuff.

What other programs other than Maxblast do this kind of formatting?

You don't need a PCI IDE card to run Maxblast. All you need is a Floppy Drive or CD Drive that can boot your computer. It works fine with the MOBO's onboard controller. I think that there may be some free low-level format utilities at bootdisk.com, but I am not sure of that.
