XP Corporate Downloads?

Yesterday, I found a link somewhere in Anandtech which led to Microsoft's Corporate Downloads for XP page, and I did download all the criticl XP updates. However, I lost the link . . . even forgot the forum, and have had no luck using AT's search.

Anyone remember where that message exchange was?

How do you guys get this link (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true) to work? When I click on it it sends me to a page with the "corporate=true" gone from the end of the URL and a blank white page of this text:

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

Follow these steps to access Windows Update through the Help and Support Center:

Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
If you are running Windows XP, click Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update.
If you are running a Windows .NET server product, click Windows Update."

This gets me nowhere, I still have to d/l updates through the regular ActiveX-based IE interface. What am I doing wrong with this link??

This work for you? Click on the top green arrow . . . then do a search for your flavor of XP and you will get to the direct downloads.
 
Ahh - figured it out!

It doesn't work using the Opera browser, which is what I use 99.99% of the time.

Also doesn't work with Nutscrape 4.x, which I use .007% of the time.

Have to use f**king IE which I ONLY have to use for M$ sites.

Should have remembered this sooner but I'm used to using Opera for Win2000 corporate updates so I figured it would work for XP as well. Silly me, trying to out-think the wonderful folks at M$.

Is it an ActiveX kind of thing? It doesn't seem like it. Is it just M$ not allowing the use of non-M$ browsers? (like the stunt they pulled with MSN sites a few weeks ago)
 
Ralf, I think you cracked the code! 🙂

I quit using Netscape 4.X over a year ago for the same reason. It seems that most everything works perfectly if you go with the flow. That can be frustrating for some, but, rightly or wrongly, business is business.

 
er, yeah thats what i want to know...what is the difference between the corporate updates and just the standard ones..?
 
With "Corporate Update" you can download the patches & fixes and store them on your hard drive or burn to CDR. This is very important if you manage several PC in a office or... *cough * cough* "corporate" environment 😉 This way one can take a CDR with all the latest patches and update each PC without having to go online with each box. This can even be automated on a large network...

For the average user, its much better to let Windows decide what you need to update!

Also, if you are on a 56K connection or have a friend/family on one, being able to download several patches can take a long time (there are 20MB to 30MB worth of updates for WinXP). It would be best to save them to CDR and help out your friend/family 🙂
 
Thanks for the link. I was browsing the forums the other day, and didn't have a chance to see the downloads because the computers at my office run Windows 98...😱 But I'm browsing it right now, and it looks cool. Thanks again.
