XP: can't rename my folders any more. Vexed.

In windows XPPro, I have an odd problem. I can?t seem to rename folders on my desktop.

I tried rightclicking to check the properties. They show in properties as read-only now for some strange reason, but when this is unchecked, it still won?t allow me to rename.

I went to folder options in the control panel and restored all default settings, but still no joy.

Corruption?

Is there anything that I can try ?

More like hexed. And me jsut reinstalling last month...ugh.

Apologies for my terrible memory, as I've had that and can't recall what fixed it!

It didn't require any system re-load, as I've never had to do that with XP pro. I vaguely recall that this as (another) time I had two Anti-Virus programs [Norton and McAfee?) loaded and they were fighting over things, slowing down my system boots.

Anyway, in your situation I'd do
Start -> Run "MSCONFIG"
and do a
Diagnostic StartUp
to see if the problem disappears. If it does, I'd switch to Selective StartUp, disabling most services and programs, then adding them back in until I found whatever caused the problem.

dbl click on "my computer"
right click on the drive that you are having problem with
left click on "properties"
left click on "security"
as long as you are in the "administrators" group (you can do this function BTW)
On the group that you are a part of (assuming administrators), make sure that you have all the "rights" boxes checked (allow) and hit apply, it make take a little bit to perform this, but afterwoods, it should be fixed. Also, if you are having problems modifying "hidden files" make sure that you have the option selected to "view hidden files" in the folder options.
