XP can't defrag???

alkemyst

No Lifer
I have FAT32 only and when I try to defrag (I am only at 1% but bootvis wants to run defrag) it goes:

Defragmenting: Compacting Files 1%...

It never moves, though I hear it working the file system.

Any ideas?

Dumb question! Does XP have a "safe" mode?????
If it does I'd attempt to defrag in safe mode........

XP does have safe mode... I think during boot you have to press and hold F8 or something like that. How long are you letting your drive defrag for? How big is the drive? If the drive is big, a defrag using xp's built in software may take a while. I don't know why it stops at 1% though.

when i defragged my HD under XP (20GB), it stayed at 2% for a LONG time, then jumped up to 35%, stayed there then jumped to 70%...yadda yadda. I'd say leave it be for a long while, and most likely it'll do what it did to me.
