XP boot up with removable drive.

I have a Syquest 1.5 internal removable drive on the second IDE port as Master. The motherboard is an Abit BH6. The bios is set for NONE for the second IDE port, master. If I set it to AUTO or put the drive parms in and boot up without a cartridge loaded, the system just sits there trying to get the parms from the drive and it can't because there is no cartridge loaded, therefore, it is set as above.

When I boot up Win98, the Syquest drive is accessed once or twice and then the boot continues, takes about a second total.

When I boot up with XP, the drive comes on and XP just sits there for a LONG time with the train running trying to get the parms for the Syquest. The Syquest is set as a removable drive in control panel in XP.

How can I get XP to check the drive and continue loading like Win98 does. I haven't timed it but the delay is 30-45 seconds.
