i have just finally upgraded to WinXP. part of the motivation was that my win2k had become unreliable as far as booting goes if i performed a hot reboot.. and also it was locking up (usually anytime i had a deadline for any reason) under many different program configurations..
what im getting at, is that this may very well be the harddrive messing up. it is an IBM 75GXP 15gig (for boot and programs, 2 partitions). i bought this drive b/c, at the time, i was under the impression that they were extremelt reliable.. but i seem to remember some hints in my forum browsing that the Deskstars can die on you...
anyway, so now i have gone to XP as of last night.. however, i would say about 50% of the time.. the blue bar splash screen just keep looping and periodically (according to the indicator light) access the harddrive until i finally decide to hit the reset button.. then, on the first reboot immediately following the failed boot.. it will usually finish loading windows, but then my keyboard (microsoft interent keyboard pro) will not respond in the log in screen.
about every 3rd or 4th time.. it will boot in record time (about 2o seconds total from WP splash screen to completed log-in.. i was impressed)
i installed the keyboard software.. it didnt fix either problem..
i installed the newest 4n1.. it didtn fix either problem..
thats really all ive done so far.. the keyboard didnt respond at the first boot off the harddrive (where you set up the internet and user accounts etc) so im thinking, for whatever reason, it would just be a botched install... but im also thinking it might be the harddrive.
any ideas? whats the reliability of the 75GXP deskstars?
thanx for any help at all.. you guys have been life savers plenty of times already
