Hey all... I'm having some problems with a puter that a guy at work helped me build. I have Windows XP, and while trying to install norton antivirus the puter just restarted itself... and it goes to the screen which saids "puter is screwed, how do you wanna boot... safe, normal, or last known good settings" Well , no matter what I choose... it just starts to load and when it gets to the Windows XP screen with the lil knight rider thing, it just restarts. Even when I do nothing and when it gets to the screwed up screen and boots normally, it will restart after a bit... Help!!! if you can

OK,

If your Norton disk is bootable, boot from it and scan your disk for a virus. IF you have a virus and try to install Norton AV, things can get very fouled up! (I know from experience).

Then, do a repair installation of XP. Boot from the XP cd, and I think that you hit r for repair. Then follow the onscreen directions.

If you don't have anything else on the hdd, reformat and do a clean install of XP.

Well, it never got a chance to install Norton. It was reading the CD and bringing up the installation screen when it just restarted. Now a few seconds into the boot process it brings up the error screen asking me how I would like to boot. Whether I choose safe mode, normal, or last good settings it will just restart after it gets to the window xp screen. I dont have a problem reinstalling xp as I havent installed anything except yahoo messenger, and well my attempted installation of norton.
