XP boot problem

I'm at the end of my rope here; has anyone seen this? After the machine locked up during a defrag (Diskeeper), it won't get past the Windows splash screen. The short progress bar at the bottom scrolls over and over, but it would seemingly stay there indefinitely. It won't boot into safe mode, it won't complete a last-known-good-boot, and I've tried fixboot nad fixmbr in repair console. After those two functions in the console, I'm lost. Any input is welcome.
