xp black???

Some kid with a copy of nlite and some black .bmps does not making an "uuber gaming OS". Dorkiness at its best.

When I owned a copy of XP Pro I still used a version like this. I liked having a stripped down version with some apps already set up and up to date. I could have made my own lite version but I am too lazy.

PS: Don't be a theif. Pay for your software or switch to *nix.

The best unatended modded OS to date is Windows Ultra 50 in 1 by eXPerience. You get the choice of 16 2000 sp4 installs, 16 XP sp2 installs, or 16 2003 server installs, plus 2 others including linux

i've always wondered about modded OS's that have been slimmed down

eXPerience is number 1 in his field of modded OS's. Do you own do diligence and you will see. Just Google "eXPerience Windows Ultra". As a matter of fact the guy who makes XP Black stole eXPeriences work and others like "returnonnights" who makes LastXP and LastV. On modded os forums his name is "Gamerman" and many refer to him as "Gaymerman" LoL.

Wow. Looks like you've done your homework on this. Thanks for the info!

These are mostly customized installs with a few services disabled, right? An easier task would be to simply do a Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, and read the 'Description' for all the Services that are running. You can disable the ones you don't need and check for any problems that crop up.

Why trust someone else's idea of 'what's important' and 'what's not'? Maybe that dude doesn't have a wireless router and he disabled all wireless-related services. Next thing you know, you are baffled why your '1337 gaming XP build' won't work with your network.

Potential headaches just to save maybe a few megs of RAM and <5% CPU cycles.

I used nLite, it's great!

But I believe because I left out Windows Media Player, thumbnail views are only generated for images, not for movies. Funny dependencies. 5% is worth it to me because I'll be on this old machine for a while still. I have 16 Processes (incl. Firefox) and 29 services running (incl. Punkbuster). Fast Boot times!

The other major thing I left off that I sometimes want is Windows Help. No big.
