how in the heck do i get rid of these popups for msn messanger and start menu?? They pop up all the time and i hate having to actively close these popups!

also on a side note, how do i remove programs from the startup. Like to keep my startup fast and efficient!

EDIT: one more thing.... I got the XP with the SP1a.. do i still need to download the patch for Blaster??

I'm not sure to what patch you're refering, there was an update for the messenger service a while back and you would need to download it from windows updates (it was not part of SP1).

But of course I would recommend you install all the critical updates that were released since SP1 since there were a number of them that have known exploits *cough* Blaster *cough*

i did all the critical updates already. I was talking about this file "WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU" as i did a search on microsoft.com found here. I installed the XP one for the fact that the XP sp1 is really for sp2.. as you can see in the file name "Q823980_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU" plus it didnt work when i tried to exe it.

This is the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1 component update to address MS03-026: Buffer Overrun In RPC Interface Could Allow Code Execution (823980).
No you do not need to install this unless you are running XP Embedded, Windows Update should provide you with the updates you need.

You're going about your firewall rules wrong. You should disallow ALL traffic into your network. Then if you have a web server, you open port 80. If you have a mail server, open 25. You can configure rules that allow traffic OUT, so you can do whatever you need to do, but you should have all ports closed to external traffic.

agreed, the best way to setup your firewall would be to block everything and than setup exceptions for things you need. On most workstations connected directly to the internet blocking all inbound traffic is the best route (since you will rarely need to have any direct inbound traffic).

Ok, im gonna have to do some research cause i got a linksys router and dont know how to configure it in that way other than filtering all ports and then forward the only ones that i need. another problem is that i dont know which ports ill be needing

1. Start>Run>Services.Msc>Disable Messenger Service to prevent window popups. DO NOT do this if you are on a business network or use certain firewall programs.
2. Download SpyBot: Search & Destroy, update your definitions and run a scan.

ty for the help with protection, and the messenger, but what i really want is to disable the popups that say stuff like, Your harddrive is low on space, or there is more that is not being displayed. Ones that have an X on them to close.
