XP and Vista Dual-boot - how can I reinstall XP without loosing Vista ?

2 HDDs, XP installed on one, followed by Vista on the other.

XP build busted (due to failed overclock) - now want to reinstall XP - but I don't think I can without loosing vista ?

I've tried and boot-sector is on the XP drive ...

also boot.ini is not used by Vista anymore so its not clear if I can reinstall XP.

Looks like if I FDisk my XP drive and reinstall XP, basically I'm going to have to reinstall Vista RC2 as well - which is a pain the butt.

anyone with any ideas please ?

first of all, it's 'losing' not 'loosing.'

Second, you should be able to fdisk and wipe our your XP drive and reinstall XP. After you are done, boot to the Vista DVD and go into the Recovery Console and run FIXBOOT (possibly also FIXMBR). Your dual boot set up should be back then with Vista.

I'm not a not a Vista expert though, so cuieing stash in 3... 2... 1...

Vista Boot Pro 3.1 can reinstall the Vista boot loader.

Seems to me you should be able to format the primary partition, reinstall XP, and then run Vista Boot Pro 3.1 to reinstall the Vista boot loader.

However, I'm not sure how this newly install boot loader would know where to find the Vista install. I'm thinking some manual editing of the boot loader would be necessary.
