XP and motherboard swap

I have an EVGA 780i motherboard that I'm thinking about swapping for a 790i stepup. Will I be able to keep my current operating system, or will I have to reinstall XP and all updates and current programs. I've got a lot of hours invested in installation of programs and upgrades and do not look forward to reinstalling everything. I've read if the chipsets are similar that it usually works OK but would like to hear some opinions.
Thanks

I've pulled motherboards out from under XP several times with no serious issues, but some prep can go a long way.

What I would do: use control panel -> add/remove programs, or control panel->system->hardware->device manager->device properties to remove any drivers for components that were on the old motherboard, but won't be on the new one. This includes chipset drivers, onboard ethernet, gpu, and sound drivers, and drivers for any pci card that won't be making the trip to a new slot. Remove them all without rebooting, and ignore/cancel any wizards that pop up, then shut the machine down. Swap the motherboard, test, power the machine back up and let Windows do its thing. Then install any custom drivers as needed.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds very reasonable and seems like it should work. I'm not committed yet but still investigating and this was part of my decision.
