XP and display monitor

I recently re-formatted my hard drive with XP and all went well. However, as I try to change the display properties, it appears that I can't move off of 480x640. I downloaded the latest drivers. I then went to the setting/advanced tab to select the monitor type and it is grayed out, not allowing me to select the drivers. What else can I do? Please note that duriong the reformatting, I used a different monitor ( at my friends house) and then went to set up the PC at my house with a Dell 772c monitor. Even the plug and play didn't recognize the new monitor. Any suggestions?

You may want to uninstall the VIDEO drivers, set it to STANDARD VGA,
then reboot (have the video card drivers handy or know where they are located)
