XP and compact flash reader

I just upgraded to XP from 98 (first edition) and my Sandisk CF reader does not need drivers anymore which is cool but do I still need to worry about "ejecting" the card prior to removing it from the reader? I remember I had to do that with it in 98.

And since I'm picking up a dazzle CF reader so I have one at the office too, does that also have the same requirement of "ejecting" the card prior to pulling it out.

(I feel silly for asking but thought I'd make sure before I nuked something here)

XP's requirement for stopping such an external device prior to removing the media is even more stringent than 98's. It puts a green arrow icon in the tray. However, I have removed my media many times from the reader/writer without any sign of trauma to the system. It just bongs after I pull it out.
