Senior member
both partitions are FAT32.

XP is installed on C
98 is installed on D

XP was installed first, 98 second

after installing 98, I booted from the XP cd, ran the recovery console, ran
fixboot.

Boot menu comes up and lists XP and 98 (great!) XP boots up fine, 98 does
not:-(

Message is : I/O Error

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\BOOTSECT.DOS

tried fdisk /mbr but it had no effect.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You have an incorrect entry in Boot.ini.

Change the line multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\BOOTSECT.DOS

to read multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
