Activating over the Internet has always worked for me, even when re-installing (after a few months they "reset" the information so the system doesn't disallow Internet activation again). Of course you need a network card that Windows has a driver built in for, in order to do the activation during installation. If it can't load a driver, you just tell it that you'll activate later, finish installing, and after you get the network card working do the activation.

Only once I think when installing a friend's system did I have to activate over the phone, and it was quick and painless, though it takes a while to read the numbers off and then get the numbers you need.

Oh I didn't understand the "just installed" part as meaning recently. Thought you meant "didn't have to do any extra work and just threw it on the drive". :)

I'll be installing XP this week sometime on a new system, so I can tell you then (not that I'll remember to come back to the thread).

I take it you're having issues with the Internet activation? If you explain the problem somebody might be able to tell you how to resolve it.

I formatted today, activated just fine. This was my 2nd installation in last two months, and probably 5th or 6th total of this copy. Too frequent activations are problem, then you will have to call them.
