XP, A7N8X, and Random Hangs

I've had a problem with XP and random hangs for a while now, and have tried to deal with it before. The problem was not so sever for the past couple years, and I could pretty much ignore it. However, recently it has gotten much worse and it is so bad right now that I really must take immediate action (read: post on AT).

Prior to these past few days the hangs were few and far between, and I knew how to avoid them. There were pretty much two circumstances under which they would happen: clicking through folders in Windows Explorer, particularly the Program Folders and directories contained therein; using Linux. In the latter scenario simply leaving Linux running overnight doing nothing in particular would lead to a hang. That problem was easily solved by never using Linux again. The folder problem could be a hassle, but normally I don't go browsing through the Program Files anyway.

This was all fine and good and avoidable up until this point, but now if I leave my computer alone for over 10 minutes it hangs. I leave it alone doing nothing but running a browser, or running no programs at all. When I come back the mouse still moves, programs respond to a couple actions and then not at all. The mouse is moving, I can click, but all applications are frozen. Windows cannot be restarted or shutdown and I have to do a hard machine reset.

I'm using an A7N8X Deluxe with a 2500+ Barton and 1G of RAM. I've got an Echo Mia audio card and a 9800 Pro. My harddrive is a Samsung 160G SATA which is connected to the onboard 3112 controller. I have tested the memory thoroughly, but no errors turn up. I have tested the harddrive thoroughly, but no errors have turned up. The temperature of the CPU is always well within normal ranges, and is never in danger of overheating. System resources are generally almost entirely free when the hangs occur. I have been experience these hangs through 2 different sets of RAM (including my current 1G), 3 different video cards, 2 different sound cards, and 3 different harddrives. I've flashed to the latest BIOS gone back in BIOS, used the drivers straight from Asus, used those from nVidia, used the basic generic drivers from Microsoft. Just so we're clear, from at first glance, and according to all system diagnosis software and common sense/knowledge, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the computer.

And yet, at this point I can't leave the computer alone for 10 minutes without coming back to a hang. In fact, as long as I keep using the computer (typing, watching a movie, listening to music, browsing the web) the hangs will not occur, unless I'm poking around the file system. But if I leave it alone, doing nothing whatsoever, it hangs.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on, or how to fix it? I got a vague tip over a year ago that maybe the SATA controller an the A7N8X hangs, and that one should use PATA drives with the mobo. I find that hard to believe seeing as how so many people must use SATA drives with this board. Any help much appreciated, this has been driving me crazy for the longest time.

check out MrChad's fix. Also, i had the exact same board and found it was pretty picky about RAM. I couldn't use Corsair, even though it's recommended. That brand caused me much frustration. I would get random blue screens, hangs, etc... w/ both the XMS and VS. what brand are you using?

I've used three different power supplies, each of higher quality than the last. The first was a generic power supply that came with my first case. The next was the Antec supply that came with my Sonata. Right now I'm using a Seasonic Super Tornado.

Like I said, I've used 2 different types of RAM. The first was a 512M chip of plain Kingston RAM. Right now I'm using a gig of Corsair XMS. I really don't think it's the RAM. With both brands I ran MemTest86 over and over again, hoping that I could narrow the problem down to the RAM. But both chips passed with flying colors time and time again.

Northbridge overheating?

Seems like if it's not the power supply or memory, could be almost anything. Try reseating all devices and reconnecting all wires.

Also check to see if Windows spins down your hard drives after a certain period of time. On a previous computer I tried that and it wouldn't come back up after they were spun down.

If it's that bad, it's likely a faulty CPU (could be something not so obvious like bad L1 cache or something).

I'm not entirely sure that the northbridge isn't overheating, but I doubt it. The temperatures have never been very high. As you can see by the amount of hardware that has gone through this computer, I have reseated all of it many, many times. That and simply swapping it out for other stuff.

How do I find out if Windows is spinning the hard drives down?

Look at your capacitors on your motherboard. See if any appear to be bulging or puking their guts.

It's in the Power Management stuff.

right-click Desktop | Properties | Screen Saver | Power...

It's off by default, so if you didn't enable it, this probably isn't your problem but you never know...
