I've had this heatsink for a while and am currently using it on an E4400 @ 3Ghz with default voltage. Average idle temps are in the high 40's and I was wondering if switching to the Thermalright 120 would make a big difference.

Yes, it would (depending on the fan you use of course). You can expect a 10-15° drop in load temperatures, and idle maybe under 40° with a Thermalright Ultra 120. I'd get the Ultra 120 Extreme though, if you want to spend that much, or the Scythe Mugen/Infinity, which is also great and somewhat cheaper. The Scythe is just a pain to install, so the Scythe universal retention kit is highly recommended, you won't have to use those push-pins then anymore.

I'll bet your U90 isn't lapped. Seems to me your temps should be lower. Are your IHS and heatsink both flat?

Yeah, lapping could be needed. Idling in the high 40's seems really high. Maybe it is not seated correctly, or doesn't have the proper amount of termal paste applied. Does your case have really bad air flow?
Out of curriousity, what are your load temps and what program are you using to read your temps?

Guys, take note - not Ultra-90, XP90... yeah, that old archaic one.

But anyway... you would definitely see a big difference. I would guess the U120extreme would get somewhere around 37-38 idle and 45 load (depending on the fan, of course, and depending on if it needs lapping or if it is lapped).

Before you spend the money, though, you should probably know your temps aren't too bad as long as full load hits under 60. The Ultra 120 extreme would definitely cool down your system and give you more headroom, but if you're short on cash, you don't necessarily need to make the upgrade.

I see said the blind man,,, My mistake, I should not have put thr "U" My suggustion still stands. I have the original 120 w/ 4 pipes and my temps on an E6600 were hella better than that. I had to lap it also.

How does the XP90 compare to the stock H/S on the C2D...? I am replacing my old S939 system with C2D (Abit IP-35E and 6750), and wonder if the XP90 from the old system would be worth keeping and installing when I upgrade, until I find something better...

If you have the correct brackets give it a shot. Check your new chip and heatsink for flat, you may have to lap. My E6600 was concave which mated pretty well with the convex heatsink. I have the 120 but I've read most thermalrights are the same way. Check before you lap, had I lapped only the heatsink and not my chip, temps would have gotten worse.
