XP-64 Bit: How long until media center XP 64?

Probably not for a while as moving to 64bit will have little to no effect on systems that would typically be running Windows MCE. Theres just not a big enough benefit to rush. On the other hand, once Microsoft releases a final version of XP 64, it shouldnt be too difficult to migrate MCE to 64bit also..

Note that 64bit does not mean faster or more stable...

No TV tuner that I know about has x64 drivers even in development. MCE x64 is probably a long way off still.

ps - this is a touchy subject for me as I'm really pissed with the lethargy of several driver development teams I've been in contact with over the past few months.

"in development" ?!?!? all you need is to compile the driver source for 64 bit, and maybe take care of a few porting execeptions. It's quite simple to port to 64 bit, it's just a question of incentive.

i know 64 bit doesnt necessarily mean faster, but in a lot of beta benchmarks there is improvement. besides, the athlon 64 is in a lot of media center pc's. it will be nice to finally be able to use a year old feature...

I don't believe we'll see a 64bit version of Media Center XP, Microsoft is only doing 64bit builds of their workstation+ OS's this time around. Longhorn on up will be available in both flavors however.

I know, that's my rebuttal to them when they tell me such things. Lazy SOBs. :|

Obviously, your not a developer nor do you work for a software company.

I work closely with our software development team at the Lab I work at and I know how quickly properly motivated programmers can port software. Within a few a weeks they could have something cobbed together for beta purposes. Months into the game now and no development work is just pitiful.

Well if you were you'd realize that these are commercial companies driven by customer demand, not the fact that they 'could' do it. And to suggest they just need to recompile the driver and they are finished is overly simplistic. There are QA and deployment processes that must be taken into account. That is a cost for a company like ATI, and they won't undertake it until there is enough demand to justify that cost.

well that's why I said "it's just a question of incentive". It's still not really that much work to compile for x86_64 arch and test it a little.See how nvidia releases all their drivers for 64-bit almost concurrently including audio, video, networking, chipset drivers which support multiple product lines for each of these categories. some companies understand the importance of catering to the early adopter/enthusiast consumer markets.

Have you seen Leadtek's capture card drivers? They're second to none, and I don't mean that in a good way.😛

Unfortunately, ViRGE is right. For my wife, her Leadtek card is fine, she is no power user. But my Leadtek card is going to be replaced with the first card to get x64 drivers that has hardware encode/decode. I'm hoping the new ATI TV 550 (whatever it's called) gets there first.
