Hey guys;

I found out yesterday that my CPU generates 77 watts of heat. My question is this; is that 77 watts generated per second\minute\hour? Thanks in advance.

Wikipedia search for watt gives this. So, 77 joules per second.
BTW, having a processor that consumes 77 watts of power is different than a processor that generates 77 watts of heat.

-edited for typos.

hee hee... that's like asking "My car says it's going 60mph. Is it doing 60mph per second/minute/hour?"

"hee hee" Just because you're to dumb to understand the question doesn't make it invalid. Get lost, troll.

Thanks for the reply. And yes, the chart I saw indicated that the 3200 generates 77 watts of heat.

Um, HardWarrior...his analogy was correct. No need to attempt to insult him.

Watt is a measurement of power. Power is the rate at which energy changes with respect to time( P = dW/dt, or Work (aka energy) = Average Power * time ) . By definition, 1 watt = 1 joule/sec, as wikipedia.com says.

You asked "is that 77 [joules per second] generated per second\minute\hour..?" Comprendes?

He did understand the question. You fail to understand what the unit "watt" stands for.

77 watts of heat generated means that your processor is generating 77 joules of energy energy every second.

No it's not. Where do you say the power goes? You can't escape the second law of thermodynamics.

I was thinking of energy ... some of the electric energy applied to the chip is used to move the electrons around, some of the energy gets 'stored' in fields, and some gets converted to heat.

Given a little more thought, though, I see that you're right. The CPU is not supplying any significant power to any other device (sure it pushes some power out when sending signals, but it gets just as much back). Since the electrical power isn't being sent somewhere else, it must be dissipated as heat. So power in = power out.

I wouldn't have asked the question if the data I saw made sense to me. And for the record, I DESPISE the idea of making fun of people for not knowing something.

"lmao?" Still giggling like a retard because I asked a question, pussy? Calm down? Okay, since we're offering unsolicited advice here's some for you; NEVER make sport of someone because they don't know something. Want some more? Ignore threads that you can't make a positive contribution to. And when you?re done with these get stuffed.

Fisrtly... you asked your question in the wrong forum. Try Processors or Motherboards.

Secondly... This is the highly technicaly forum. This forum is reserved for an elite group of individuals for intelligent discussion about topics.

People who post here are expected to research and have some knowledge about what they are talking about. Forgive me, but knowing what a watt is is fundamental to your question, and you should have been able to look it up in a dictionary or at some online site. Nothing that TUXDAVE said was out of line.

IE The highly technical community DESPISES people who ask questions here without first making sure you have a basic understanding of the subject and have read the rules of this particular forum area.

Welcome to the Highly Technical Forum! This is a place to discuss the latest issues and technology in the fields of computer architecture and engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, and other sciences. It is meant as a forum where people who are serious about technology can share ideas and thoughts without concern for product and brand loyalties. We welcome a wide range of technical topics, from "How does a CPU work?" to "Which cache mapping policy offers the best trade-off in terms of hit ratio and access time?"

Questions regarding troubleshooting, technical support, and product advice belong in other appropriate forums such as General Hardware, Networking, Video, etc. They have more traffic and, they are visited by knowledgable, enthusiastic members eager to share good advice and help troubleshoot problems.

Flame wars, flame bait, blatant fanboy type posts and personal attacks are strictly forbidden; off-topic posts are likely to be moved or locked.

Have fun, as you use this forum as a place to learn, teach, and discuss these topics (but don't rely on it to do your homework).

Firstly, why should I give a damn what you say? Secondly, if this forum is so "elite" why does general membership at Anand allow access to it? Get over yourself before your head explodes. All this and not a word aimed at the moron who initiated the hostilities by making fun of me for SIMPLY ASKING a question?

Have fun, as you use this forum as a place to learn, teach, and discuss these topics (but don't rely on it to do your homework).

Where does it say that participants have the right to poke fun at someone for asking a question?

"hee hee... that's like asking "My car says it's going 60mph. Is it doing 60mph per second/minute/hour?"

This CRAP is the essence of "flame bait" and fanboism. I didn't ask for a brain-DEAD analogy, I asked at what rate my processor dissipates those 77watts of heat, BECAUSE THE CHART I SAW DIDN'T SAY. If you can't understand why I would get angry based on a response like this that's YOUR problem, not mine. Note: If you don't want to get flammed, don't respond. Just let it go.

No... you didnt ask for a brain dead analogy... you asked a brain dead question.
The chart didnt say what you were asking, because the chart assumed the same thing everyone here assumes... You have the basic knowledge that a watt means joules every second.

So far...your the only one who was flame warring...

The analogy was correct & did not insult you. He did not say anything directed personally at you...
I dont see anything in those words that says... "HardWarrior, you're a DumAss" or anything like that unlike your comments...

I dont care if & why you get angry at his response or mine, because if you didnt wanted to get flamed you shouldnt have asked the question at all without first looking up what a Watt is... aww, but if you looked it up, you would already have the answer... and then you wouldnt have had a question to ask...would you.
So if you dont want to get flamed...dont let it go.... just go away.

Good Question. I think the members of our elite society should discuss this topic and possibly change that fact by issuing some suggestions to the anandtech forum moderators.

Being a pseudo-intellectual scumbag it surprises me that you don?t have something better to do than argue over NOTHING with a ?commoner.? Anyway, let's see what you're made of:

Brain-dead my question may have been to you, but to me it was something I wanted to know. That your head is so far up your ass that you don't understand this speaks VERY poorly of you, and brands you as both shallow and arrogant. Yes, if I had looked up the word "watt" I would have seen the per second correspondence in joules, but I didn't. I made the mistake of coming to this forum, where the smart people are, and ASKING in hopes that someone would simply explain it to me. Instead I get lambasted for NOT knowing what I didn't know.

Yeah, great forum.

Moreover, Einstein, I'm SURE there are some things YOU don't have an intuitive grasp of. You'd be a LOT healthier if you include some humility to balance that FACT.

Again, you're assuming that I give a damn what you say, feel or think. You aren't a mod. You're just another asinine child who sees online as a place to act out a control fantasy. I won't feed your delusions, but what I WILL do is continue to post here, and in any other forum I please, as long as I do so with good intentions. If this doesn't meet you nonexistent "standards" you can just go pound sand or commit suicide out of frustration. Either would do.

"Elite society?" This isn't Skull-and-Bones boy, it's just another forum. Please, by all means, pester a mod about how you want your tender little baby ego insulated from the poor, dumb plebes. What a pompous ass you are.

With the way you asked the question, it sounded like you made the common mistake of confusing a unit of power (energy per time or watt) with a unit of energy (joule). If you didn't understand what a watt was, you should have come out and asked the question: "What is a watt, and how does it relate to heat generation?". The question you asked indicated that you had some exposure to physics, but that you did not understand the difference between power and energy.

In the future, ask the question you want answered. Also, don't piss on the people in any of these forums. Tux Dave had the same reaction to your question that I did at first. His comment may have been out of line, but in his defense, in your question you tried to make it sound like you had an understanding of what a watt is, when in fact, you don't.

I'm not making fun of you here... I'm just trying to lay the situation out for you from our point of view.

Answering a question, or more importantly, offering advice should NEVER be approached from a perspective of strained patience or disgust thinly-veiled by sarcasm. That I didn't pose my question to your liking doesn't alter this fundamental social construct. I in NO WAY implied that I knew what a "watt" was. I simply parroted what I saw in relation to my CPU's thermal output. I implied no knowledge whatsoever, and would have GLADLY digested even the most verbose explanation offered. That you seem to feel the need to wallow in the semantics of what I saw as a simple question is VERY indicative of what I see as a major problem of this "elite society" the rest of us call a forum. You might want to consider this.

Again, a forum member attempting to exercise authority he doesn't possess. If I do decide to ask another question here, which I won't, I'll express it in a way I feel most comfortable. Your "wishes for the future" won't be considered. Moreover, when "pissed" on, I will "piss" back with interest. There's nothing you can do about that either. I always treat others with respect, until such time as a different approach is warranted. You might want to consider this as well.

Let me get this straight, "our" point of view, as expressed by you, is to use sarcasm and high-handed derision in an effort to humiliate those who genuinely want to understand something?

I find this particularly interesting: "His comment may have been out of line, but in his defense,"

If this bellicose twit was out of line why even mount a defense? Answer if you want, but I won't be back for the response. If you have anything more to say please PM me, rg. To those who took the time to try and answer my mind-numbingly ignorant and poorly-phrased question, again, thank you.

Hardwarrior, you shouldn't be making a big deal about my comment. You're gonna face much more criticism in your life, why get caught up on the little ones? In fact, why should even try so hard to make a small deal into a big deal? Maybe you need to spend some time in OT and you'll learn how not to take every comment so seriously. Why bother getting your pride or ego hurt over a little elbow jabbing comment? If it bothers you that much, then I openly APOLOGIZE for my comment. If you're still bothered by it, then that's something you need to deal with.

Btw, thanks rgwalt & sao123 for defending me when I wasn't here.

Chill out before you get a vacation.

You asked a poorly-phrased question in HT (and obviously without doing even the most basic research into it), TuxDave was amused by it and made a comment about it. He didn't insult you personally. You responed by calling him "dumb" and a troll. While his post might be viewed as impolite, yours in this thread have been downright insulting and far more disruptive and annoying.
