Hi all, I searched the web but didn't find much.

I downloaded free 120 day trial of XP 64 from M$ and I already have full version of xp 32.

I play games and do some web browsing, is all.

My new PC will have

e6750
4 gb RAM
Intel's P35 chipset
8800GT

Should I go with xp64 or xp32?

edit: I do some some C++ programming too, hope Visual Studio 2005 runs fine on xp64.

You should be fine.

Most games will run just fine, and your hardware looks like it should have good driver support.

I just downloaded the trial also. I don't have a spare OS so I thought I'd give it a try before I buy another copy of Windows. I'm gonna do it tomorrow, and I found drivers for everything which was cool. It's a spare computer so if it's a mess it's no biggie.

Asus A8N-E nforce 4, FX-55, 1 gig Mushkin Black Level II, onboard sound, X1950XT, etc.

I think MS made a mistake in not promoting xp x64.
I've found it to be an extremely stable OS, even more so than xp 32bit.
Xp x64 is based off the windows server 2003 kernel (which was already very stable).
They didn't just take xp 32bit and add 64 bit support. They just re-used the xp name.
I guess with vista coming out though, that it would have hurt sales.

And Server 2K3 is based off of XP SP2 IIRC, it's not like they're completely different source trees or anything.

Why anyone would want to install an abandonned OS is beyond me. If your doing a new install, bite the bullet and install V64 on that rig, you'll be happier.

There is little truth to the way you are phrasing this 'they just re-used the XP name'. No, they built the current build of Windows workstation which picked up that kernel version. Windows 2003 kernel was based on the XP kernel, it's cyclic. You act like they are two disconnected source trees.

Why anyone would want to install a buggy, slow, over priced os like vista is beyond me.

Because it's not. But, rather than start that here, get yourself aquainted with the facts here:

I did not bite the bullet and install V64 because my budget is tight.
I'm waiting for a special to buy Vista through my college for cheap (I'm in a computer science program). Until then, I'll use XP64, when trial expires, I'll go back to XP32 which I already own.

P.S. Thanks for linking to Busting Vista Myths.

Actually it is.
I need an OS that can run in a production environment.
vista is not it.
Maybe in a year or two it will be ready for the workstation, but for now, its not.

For what the OP wants to do it will be fine and I think the OP will be happy with Vista x64.

Apart from the Vista x64 option was never part of the original question the OP asked.

Chill it guys, V64 is gonna be fine for me, I just cannot afford it now. Plus MS will have time to fix a couple more issues w/ Vista, others - time to polish drivers, etc while I wait for the deal thru college.

If it aint broke, I'll fix it till it is.

I wasn't going to buy XP64 :) Just use trial for 120 days.
And I was hoping to buy Vista in college for like $70.

How many people that recommend vista over xp x64 have actually run xp x64 for any length of time ?
Or are they doing the same thing they accuse others of doing with vista ?

We've run both, we've developed software for both, we've been at Microsoft plugfests for both. XP64 is a nice solild abandonned OS. All the real work is on the Vista side and forward. You've gotten it in your mind its not 'ready', but those of us running it for the last two years know your wrong. Is the XP64 base plus improvements, how couldn't you like that ;)

I am using the XP 64 bit trial also. So far so good, no errors or bugs. Feels just like XP Home which I am used to. If I could get it for $50 I'd take it, but I will go back to 32 bit eventually.

I understand this is the case with Vista, but I don't own a Vista license yet, I'm holding out. I'd be interested in 64-bit the next time I blow away the drive and start over (about once a year).

Can our retail 32-bit XP keys work on a retail 64-bit XP CDs?

Thanks.

i dunno but vista 32 can work with vista 64. Guess they did alot of work to xp64 cause when i tried it about 2 years ago it was crap.

As a gamer myself I'm more then happy with Vista x64 and or even Vista x86 for gaming, stability is excellent etc....I have used virtually every OS from Microsoft since the good old Dos 6.22 days(been using XP for 7 years so don't say it lightly),why stick with XP when you know you going to have to move with the times sooner or later, not to meantion better security, better memory handling,SP1 which is now officially available etc....I could go on but I think you get my point.

As to overpriced I think you find its very good value for money especially with latest price drops.

Getting back on topic the main thing to watchout for with 32 bit v 64 bit OS (regardless of the OS in question) is that you can't run any 16 bit games/software in a 64 bit OS,unless you dual boot or go virtual OS etc.....personally as a gamer I don't have any issues since I don't run or use any 16 bit games/software,obviously make sure you have 64 bit drivers available for your hardware etc...
