Why can I not change the clock multiplier in my bios in an a7n8x deluxe for a 2800 chip?

I have tried 12.0 12.5 13.0 and 13.5. 12.5 works becuase it is the stock one. All the others will not let my computer boot after I set them. All tried at 166fsb. Tried 12.0 at 185 mhz, didnt work.

Is there a way around this? Something ez to do? Is this normal? Are some 2800's unlocked?

Learning more everyday,

-Todd

Thanks for any help!

its locked. the only way to overclock it would be to increase the fsb, so try bringing it to 180 and work your way up. to calculate clock speed, multiply the multiplier wiht he fsb. ie. 12x180

It will overclock to 183 with no voltage added very stable. It will overclock to 200fsb with 1.70 volts. It will pass prime 95 and pc mark just fine, but 3dmarks 2001 and 2003 will just end without any warning. I have tried it with 1.85 volts to see if its a stability problem, and that is not the case. So basically it is not stable enough, atleast for me reasons, at 200fsb.

Is there a way i can tell by looking at the chip itself to see if it is locked? I have 3 2800's sitting at work and have no way of testing them there.

I have ddr 400 and want to utilize 200mhz frontside bus to improve memory performance.

Thanks!

BTW I am a computer technician, simple answers dont help me.

This is the code from my 2500+ Barton (non-mobile), but it's generally the same for all the XP chips:

AXDA2500DKV4D
PQZEA 0332 MPMW
1999 AMD

Note, some of the code on the 2800+ will be slightly different, but you're looking for the 4 numbers that are shown in bold. The 0332 means my chip was made during production week 32 of the Year 2003. If your 2800+ was produced after about week 32 of last year, then it's gonna be locked.

Ok here is the article I was looking for
http://www.upgradeware.com/english/product/xptmc/cpu1.htm

From that article:

The current Athlon XP might be "locked" version even though L1 is uncut. To the best of our knowledge & research that some of the latest batches of Athlon XP with new PCB from serial number Axxxxx 0333~Axxxxx 0339 might be "locked" versions although some are NOT. However, serial numbers such as Axxxxx 0340 & later versions are almost the "locked" versions. The multiplier can't be adjusted eithter through the newest motherboards or XP-TMC.

All that basically says is if your chip was produced after week 40 of last year, it's definately locked.
