XP 2700+ vs. Sempron 2300+

I am building a budget box for a friend and plan on using a Barebone kit from Newegg - the ASUS A7VT Terminator. Its chipset is a VM K266 Pro / VT 8235CE. I don't have a clue on her budget but I am assuming < $300. She is upgrading from a K6 2-350 so I figure anything will blow her away. If I buy this box is it a good idea to to spend the extra $60 and get a 2700+ XP or just go cheap and get a Sempron 2300+ ? I think the WOW factor from going from the stone age to the 21st century will be enough to make her happy, but as a enthusiast I am thinking of getting her the best bang for the buck.

Anybody have any ideas / advice?
