XP 2700+ to be first 333Mhz FSB Athlon

How reliable is this site..I just seem to read that 166fsb was not around the corner..in fact the 2400 and 2600 will not be in mass production until mid Sept as I understand it..so this seems to be unlikey that the 2700 will be out in Mid Oct

Well no-one thought AMD would bring out the 2400+ and 2600+ so fast either, but it happened.

This site is about as reliable as any other of it's type.

If it really does surface with 512kb of L2 and a 333MHz bus, and is rated at 2700+, I wonder what the actual clock speed would be. Not that it really matters... faster is good. 😀

I kinda doubt they'll add the extra cache. Wouldn't that just make it Barton?

I have to agree, doesn't seem like they'd want to Barton-ize it just yet. Probably just speculation...

Well, they didn't exactly "bring it out." They just moved the "launch" up from October. You still won't be able to buy one for a while. (Some say October, as originally indicated by AMD.)

sources being who? "XT0R586" on efnet?
Heh, sometimes I think that guy is theinquirer's #1 source. 😉

Back to the topic at hand, haven't I seen articles where it shows that bumping the FSB up to 166mhz shows anywhere between a 0-5% gain? (Or am I mistaken?) If that's correct... That's not THAT big of a deal.

Here's one such article: Tech Report It certainly didn't make a night-and-day difference there. The author closes with the reflection that the 266MHz bus might not be a bottleneck for the 2200+, but still might be necessary to pave the way for faster CPUs as time went on. What I think would probably help is more L2 cache, so whenever Barton finally gets here, I'll be curious to see if it provides a meaningful boost by virtue of the added cache.

As the reliable link above indicates, the 2700 will be the last thoroughbred and will only have 256k l2 but will include the 333fsb. The 2800 will be the barton with 512k and 333fsb
