XP 2500+ Voltage Question

I've got a Asus A7V8X motherboard and a XP 2500+ Barton. Inside the BIOS I set the CPU speed to the 1.83GHZ that the Barton's supposed to be and put the memory to the 333Mhz frequency (when on default the speed of the CPU was 1.43 or something like that...).

I have not overclocked or played with any of the voltages. Inside Windows and the Asus PC Probe the voltage says 1.712. I keep seeing people say "bump the voltage up to 1.7" when overclocking. I havn't done any overclocking, but it's already at 1.712... Have I done something wrong or is this correct?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Eric

The default voltage for 2500+ Barton's is 1.65v. Just go into your BIOS under CPU (or Vcore) voltage and change it to default (if it is set to something else).

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much about Asus Probe reporting 1.71v as the Vcore, as it could be caused by inaccurate readings.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I figured that could be the cause so I went in there and changed it to 1.65 manually. I'm not sure why it autos to 1.712 (probably because it thinks I'm overclocking the processor when in actuallity I've just set it to its default speed).

Also, it idles around 50C with the stock HSF. I put on AS3 and I have no case fans (I think I will go out and buy on though). I'm not going to worry about it after that though. Is this the right idea?

Thanks again,

Eric

Well, 50C is a little high for idle loading? What kind of temps are you getting under load?

I've read that the Bartons are OK for temps under 70C, but I'd never push a chip that far. Personally, I'd try to keep it around 55C or lower under full load. Regardless, definately get some case fans as the airflow through the case will help to lower those temps.

Yeah, personally I don't like the temps either. However I did reseat the HSF and with this new style retail HSF I don't think you can screw up on it because there's no "edge" that would be touching the socket (it has this silver chunk of metal screwed onto the bottom that keeps it up away from the socket) and it seems like it is on pretty good. I used AS3 which would be the only difference from a straight retail situation.

I'll see what happens with the case fans. I'm not really sure what else to do. There are absolutely no obstructions around the HSF/processor (I always organize the wires). I've always done P4 systems and never have had a problem with them, so I have relatively no experience with AMD.

Any more opinions are greatly appreciated and thank you for the ones already given.

Yeah I set it all in the bios to the correct settings for the XP2500+.

Also, I put in two case fans and now the temperature on max load (Prime95 torture test heat generating mode) is 53C and I think idle was 42C, does this seem better? Idle before was 50C and load was 64C so that's quite an improvement.

All the latest Asus motherboards I've seen always overvolts by about 0.05V. So if you want 1.75, set it to 1.70. Your voltage reading is accurate.

Yeah, it's a somewhat know prob that boards under- or overvolt sometimes. I have to set my Shuttle AN35N-U to 1.7 V to get real 1.65 V.

Well it lets you easily set the voltages to "Automatic" which goes to 1.712, and then there were three other settings under manual and one of those was "1.65" so I put it to that. Both the Asus Probe and CPUID say it is at 1.65 so can I take their word for it?

Thanks again for all the help,

Eric

hey sorry to interrupt, but i'm having a problem actually changing the voltage all together in my BIOS. it doesn't appear that my bios will even allow me to change the voltage from say 1.7 to 1.65, it only allows me to change like +.5% etc. stuff like that. could one of you guys tell me how to change that in my bios?
