XP 2400 or Barton 2500?

I am about to purchase a new computer... I am probably going to get an nf7-s ver. 2.0 and try and use a 200 mhz FSB. I haven't decided on memory yet, but I will probably get some sammy 3200 (I dont have any need of going over 200 fsb and I really know nothing about ram timings either...)

At any rate, I need a processor to put in this thing... I haven't seen an incredible amount of information posted on the new Bartons and their overclock ability. Which one would I have a better chance of hitting say... 12x200??? Which one is going to, on average, have a better overclock? (ie after the average overclock, which will be faster) Are there any modifications that have to be done to the Barton that do not have to be done to the tb b's?

Would I be better to wait, save the $40 difference, and put that towards my next processor? Will I really gain that much difference with a barton?

I am just really curious to hear some more barton stories because everyone seems to talk about the 2100's and 1700's.

I will be using a slk800u or 900u, havent made up my mind yet.

I am in the same boat right now, and I think I may order the Barton. it's a 333 FSB and I think it's worth the extra money, myself.

Id get the Barton, its more or less guaranteed to hit 2.3-2.3 Ghz with standard air cooling, although overclock the FSB with the 2400+ and youll more or less get the same headroom. Think Ill plump for a 2500+ when the time comes.

I don't think I'd look at the 2400 or the barton. I'd look at the 2100 or the barton (2500).

I bought the barton 2500 and am running at 2100 (10.5 x 200) smooth as silk at stock voltage and a volcano 9 (average at best for cooling). I can take it to 2150 stable, and I can break 2200 but it fails Prime95 almost immediately at that speed. I doubt I could hit 2400 even with serious voltage boosts or top of the line cooling. But remember - I'm running at 200mhz FSB (400 memory) and have the extra cache on the chip. So my performance is pretty impressive at this speed.

I don't think you'll see the bang for the buck with the 2400. I'd either go with the barton (and get the L2 cache and the more likely higher bus speeds) or drop to the 2100 and clock the hell out of it. The 1700 is too big a gamble to me - it's a fantastic deal if you get lucky, but if you get a dud you really are lagging in performance. I wouldn't get the 1700 unless I was pinching every penny, or unless I could get several and keep the pick of the litter for myself.

My experience -

barton 2500 - have one that will do 2250mhz at 1.75
XP2700 - tried 2 - both would do about 2350 at 1.75
XP2100 - tried 2 - one will do 2400 at 1.75 the other 2350 at 1.75

I'd get a XP2100 B 302.

IMHO

thanks peeps! didnt help me much though! heh. Now I still got 2 to choose from, just different ones lol.

If I get an nforce2 board, is there anything special I would have to do to the barton that I wouldnt have to do to the 2100 or 2400??? I am a novice on even the most optimistic appraisal... and the unlocked "just adjust the bios" mentality is really how I want to ease into overclocking...

i think the barton can only go up to 12.5x multiplier
i'd get the 2100+ because it's half the price

You wouldn't go over 12.5 multiplier for a barton anyway, unless you have memory that can't handle the 166/333 bus speed (in which case you wouldn't be buying a premium chip in the first place, I would think.)

The beauty of the barton, along with the extra L2 cache, is that it's rated at 333, and is more likely to approach 200/400 than a 266-based T-bred.

I would vote 2500+ Barton.

HOWEVER, I would recommend waiting a month and getting a 400MHz FSB Barton.

Paid <$100 for a TbredB 2100+ (0248) that I have running at 12x197 (2364mhz) with an unmodded 8RDA+. 2x256 Corsair XMS PC3200. This is my home system. I have a "spare" TbredB 2100+ (0302) that I intend to eventually run in another home system.

I have a $170 Barton 2500+ coming that I will setup with a new Abit NF7-S rev 2 (I hope it is a rev 2!). 2x512 Corsair XMS PC3200 LL. This system will be my new work computer. I had a reasonable $$ limit to build a system from scratch. I am tired of disposable computers purchased through the University IT department. Parts should arrive next Tuesday.

I am anxious to do some comparisons. Plus I can swap things and basically find ways to spend many, many hours of getting little else accomplished.

Should be fun, and hopefully informative (for me, at least).

Keep us updated, you certainly have the parts to really give those CPUs a go! :D
I'm pretty psyched myself, just flashed to 1003 for my A7N8X-D and I'm now running over 200MHz FSB! :D Couldn't go over 198MHz w/out my 9700pro crapping out. Before that, couldn't do over 193MHz without serious stuttering. Gonna keep pushing the FSB and finally stress my 1024 TwinX PC3200LL :D
