Just got myself a XP 2400+ CPU and an asus a7n8x mobo and i'm getting some odd temp reading (i think...?)

The temp sensor on the mb says that it's running cool at 37C.
But the bios sensor that is supposed to measure the INTERNAL temp of the CPU is around 56C.

I've read that ~85C is all it can take...

This is a huge difference, is it supposed to be like this ?
Or maybe i'm being too paranoid :D

Anyway, what are you guys getting for temp on similar configurations ? (i'm thinking cpu here...)

Speedfan is able to read out both the mb temp & the bios temp.. (i'de hate to reboot just to see the bios temp :D)
Useful tool.

I was skeptical about the XP2400 also. When using an ASUS board the temps were always showing in the low 50's no matter what I did. Swapped the board and I guess there was some calibration problem since the temps are now 40C after a couple of hours of gaming, and it usually stays around 37C under normal use with a case temp of 33C. Since your system temp is in the mid 30's my guess would be to check the thermal grease and make sure everything is clean and flat. What HS are you using?

texun: are those temps from a BIOS reading or from the board temp sensor ?

Using MBM the temps are within 1C of the BIOS for system and cpu. The cpu sensor is located in the socket so I'm not sure how accurate it really is. Probably within 10C of actual. My ASUS board showed an average of 50C for the cpu with the same setup. Your board probably shows a more accurate reading. Have you given it the "feel test" to see if it is hot? When I touch the HS it feels only slightly warm, which tells me it's working regardless of sensor readings. If your HS is not noticeably warm it could mean that it is not making necessary contact to pull heat from the cpu. If it feels hot then it's working but just not keeping up.

The Igloo is interesting... specs say it's good for a PIII 1.4 max or an XP3000. I was not expecting to see the specs max out on the PIII before the XP. Still, it's a copper bottom cooler and I would think you should get better that what you are seeing. Have you tried running it with the side off? What board are you using?

My 2400 used to idle around 43C and after an hour of gaming UT2003 would go up to 48-49C. When I upgraded my vid card to a GeForce 4 4600 the temps went up alot since the vid card raised my case temp quite a bit and it would idle around 48C. Upgraded my case fans to two Sanyo Denki 5000rpm fans and it dropped the cpu temp down to where it was. Maybe case temp/air flow is an issue here. One thing is for sure the 2400 runs alot hotter than the 2200. My friend has almost the exact same setup and his runs about 5-7C cooler than mine.

Ditto

The problem is Asus probe.
The wrong cpu sensor is read (socket instead of on-chip). Yes, your 2400 has a on-chip temp sensor thats supposed to be accurate. The bios reads that sensor.

I use "Speedfan" to detect the on-chip sensor temps. CPU temps read about 20C higher than asus probe.
