I am doing an upgrade for my parents, and I am going to "donate" a Shuttle AK32L Motherboard, and a copy of Windows XP/Pro to this project. What I would like to know is which would be better for them, a new Applebred Duron 1.8, or an XP 2000+ Thorton?

I will probably put 512MB on the MoBo, and put in an older nvidia 16MB AGP card. Their main use will be internet browsing/email (via dialup) and also, doing some video editing. The video work will mostly be an exercise in transfering 500+ VHS tapes to DVD via an ADS Instant DVD 2.0 USB device and a Sony CDU-530 DVD+/-RW.

Should I go for the slightly faster clock speed, or the slightly higher L2 cache?

Thanks for any input.

Does that Shuttle board have any overclocking features? if so, Mobile XP > *

Sandra reports my 2400+ @ 2.26GHz is faster than an Opteron 2.2GHz and a P4 3.2GHz at everything except SSE2 :D

2 out of 3 duron 1.6's I tried would run overclocked at 166 fsb (2000) without increasing the voltage.

i would go for the xp, unless you think you can enable the cache on the duron.
