XP 2000+ (Is this normal???)

Hiya folks, *First time COM upgrade'r' here*

I've got a few rookie questions for you all... Any help is greatly appreciated! 🙂

I've just gotten my new processor from Newegg, to go on my 4 day old ECS K7S5A Pro Mobo.

I could not wait to take out my old Duron 800 and fire up this new XP 2000! Right! Expecting to look at the system information and see a CPU speed of 1600 (give or take), but nooooooooo! All it shows up as is 1244MHZ GRrrrrrrrrr

***My first question is: Is this a normal occurance? I've read about the "burn in times" -- Is that what I need to let happen with this one... just leave it running for 12-24 hours or so, and then recheck it?

***My next question is: Did I get a good pull out of the grab bag with my new *retail* processor... Here are the numbers off the CPU:

AXDA2000DUT3C Y838646270023
AIUJB 0318SPCW

***Last question, for now: Which of the above numbers are the *serial number* for my warranty COA

for your question: make sure your FSB is set @ 133. for example, the first time i popped in my 1700+, the computer read it at 1100Mhz (100x11). i just changed the FSB to 133 and bam, 1700+

for your second question: i believe thats a throughbred B, nice pull

Shady06,

Thanks for the info! I will reset that fsb and see what happens.

*trembles*

I didn't realize until the payment was already sent for this mobo at ebay, but it's not very well suited for OC'ing. At this point, that may be a good thing though! 😉

Thanks again!

The serial number is on the retail AMD heatsink fan's sticker 🙂 That incident of the MHz needing to be manually adjusted is quite routine.

Thanks for the info, mechBgon. Mine is stamped onto the Heatsink, but I wrote it into my notes also.

Weird thing with the settings change, once I hit F10 and the machine rebooted, my monitor shutdown and the box kept rebooting. Cleared the CMOS and now am having to reload all of the drivers again... according to winders anyway.

Ho-Humm, humble pie here I come!

wOOt!

After stumbling through who knows how many threads, at countless forums, I've at least confirmed that I got a high-end T-bird 'B' chip! This Fan really sucks a big weenie though, it won't spin any higher than 3200. I've not seen the cpu go any higher than 40 though.

As for getting this puppy up to speed... hmphhhhhhh, still no luck! I flashed the bios with 'honey bios HX0120.rom which added several more frequency settings to use, but I still get a dead monitor and continual reboots afterwards. I even pulled one of my pc133 'PNY's' out to see if that was causing the problem's.... still no luck! I suppose (AFAIK) I am down to three other options to try at this point, four if you count running heavyload for many more hours.

1- Research about my psu (Antec 300W)

2- Upgrade to PC2100 DDR (at least - likely 2700 if I do so)

3- RMA the damn thing!

*SHRUGS* dunno fo sho!

heh actually i can field this one

take out one of those sticks, it wont reboot

(known issue with k7s5a using 2 sticks of pc133 sdram at the same time)

can use 2 sticks of ddr together though

edit: also if u do get random crashes (not all the time but maybe after stressing the system) be sure to replace that heatsink on the northbridge and use thermal paste/epoxy, ECS use double sided tape to stick it on and its not the greatest for thermal transfer which at 133fsb can cause it to overheat

You are correct, about it being a known issue. I've done that though, still to no avail.

This same ram worked fine (both sticks) with my old tyan kt-a mobo after changing the fsb freq to 133.
