I just baught the chip this week... I had been using a friends 700 Duron... I placed it in the socket and it only registers as a 1200. The bus clock is automatically set at a lower speed, and when I try to set it to what it should be throws the Blue Screen of Death out at me with a serious error. I think the Chip is bad, what do you think? Is there something else I can do? I am using a MSI Nvidia MoBos with 512 DDR, GeForce 3 Ti 500 . Please help if you can. Thanks.:confused

You're too quick to assume the chip is bad. Duron runs at 100FSB and your other problem could have surfanced when FSB was jacked to 133. This is completely irrelevant to CPU itself.

tell us:

Motherboard exact model
power supply model
memory brand and type

The Motherboard is a MSI K7N 420 PRO, Memmory is Crucial, Power supply is an Enlight 300W HPC-300-101.
I tried setting the bus fequency to 133, that is when it wigs out.

Is the memory PC100 SDRAM, DDR PC1600 or PC133, PC2100 DDR? If it's either of the first two, you will likely not be able to run at 133 until you get new RAM...if it's the latter, you might be increasing the FSB from 100 to 133 in increments rather than starting at 133...this will make a huge difference because in the first case, your PCI and AGP bus will be overclocked to the max, in the latter case, it'll be in spec.

The RAM is PC2100 DDR Ram, 2 sticks so the clock should easily run at 133. Man this bugs me. Can you think of any other factors that could be the cause of this? I would appreciate any help anyone could offer. If not, newegg is getting a return, and I will be without a processor for a while... Do you think it could be the Motherboard?

Don't know if that is your problem but that powersupply is only certified up to a 1700+ if it is a Rev C1, only up to 1600+ if a Rev C0.

Could that be the problem? How did you find out the rating for the power supply? Where can I go to learn more about power supplies and what they support as far as cpu's are concerned?
What would you recommend for a 2Ghz + machine (power supply)? I built a machine for my brother that used the Enhance 300W PS, XP 2000 cpu, and it worked great.

I don't think that it is a power supply issue, but I will keep that in mind. Does anyone out there have any other suggestions? I need to get this thing working as soon as I can, the way it is supposed to work. Please help if you can. Thanks.

Do you have Enlight EN-8304946 HPC-300-101 ? That is only capable of 165W on 5V+3.3V. AMD recommend at LEAST 180.

Did you set the jumper on the motherboard to 133 FSB? Or just change it in the BIOS? You need to do both if you haven't already.

I thought that the motherboard was jumperless, but I will check that, great idea. Thanks

Oh yes, the case is the first one listed, Enlight medium ATX.

Thanks. I remember reading that page of the manual ( I looked it up just now too.) and checking to make sure that that jumper was on the auto mode (133) and it was, but I will check it again tonight when I get home.

You could also look into a bios upgrade for your mobo here. Thats how I got my XP 1900+ to work on my Asus A7M266.
