I think there are too many variables here.

First off, what resolution are you running at? Anything above 1280x1024 would probably stress the video card more than your cpu so an x800gto upgrade may be worth it at higher resolutions or with more eye candy.

Your cpu runs at 133fsb, so a memory upgrade would not help at all, unless you can magically get that motherboard to overclock your cpu.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say your "crap mboard" is an ECS k7s5a? If it is, get honey bios and you can overclock all the way up to 150fsb, although a little buggy. If you don't have this mobo, forget what I said, it's really early in the morning and I didn't get any sleep yet.

In the end, your friend is giving you this video card so just take it and report back to us your results.

I would suggest that you get a cheap AM2 upgrade if you are not a hardcore gamer, if you are then get Conroe

Umm.... When he could get a new video card for free? OP: Tell us your crappy non-OCable motherboard. There might be a BIOS set out there that could help get you to OC.

Just take the X800GTO. Your friend is Giving it to you, so don't question the value of this and just take it. How much ram do you have? Ram will limit the FPS with a good video card far sooner than a CPU ever will. It'll(the xp 1800+) only hold you back at 800*600 resolutions or lower at medium settings.

If the Biostar is a KT266a based chipset then it might support/tolerate 166MHz (333) FSB, which would "help" however, which XP1800+ CPU do you have? Palomino or T-Bred? A T-Bred would probably handle the 133MHz to 166MHz mem upgrade witout a sweat, but the Palomino's were pretty limmited, especially on a MB that has no OC features.

Realise you are probably limmited OC feature wise on the Biostar. I doubt that your current setup was even able to max the 9000 fully.

i am currently running 512 mb of very generic ram 2.5cas 133

i have the card installed and got no better performance/quality

oc on mboard is very limited but fsb setting goes up to 166 but this ram wont go there

just wasnt sure if new ram would help

cpu is a t-bred

if i went with a stick of 166 it would take cpu speed from 1.5 - 1.8gz

would this be a significant move forward to help this new card out?

Assuming the stock multiplier of the CPU is 11X, then 11x166MHz=1830MHz or there abouts. Hopefully your T-bred can accomplish this at default voltage, if not you may have to pin mod it to accomplish a higher default voltage.

Of course an extra 300MHz is going to help, as will the higher FSB. You might want to get some DDR400 mem, which will run 166MHz/333MHz as you could use this on an A64 up-grade, but Conroe or AM2 will require DDR2 type mem.
