I have an Athalon XP 1800+ with a Epox 8kha+, four harddrives (2 120s, an 80 and a 40), and 2 cdrom devices. Once i installed the 2 120s CPU temps started to climb above 66C. Here are a few pics of the case Messy , and as you can see it is not very pretty :disgust: . I just ordered some rounded IDE cables, so hopefully that helps clean up the mess a little bit. But do you guys have any other suggestions as to what i can/should do? Thanks.

OMG, OH NO, AIIIIEIEIEIE NOOOO!!! :) That's one scary mess of cables you've got there. Just try to move those cables out of the way so the fan can get some air to the heatsink, and you should be all right. Whick case and HSF is it BTW? My XP1800 usually stays in the upper 40s/low 50s using an alpha PAL8045 with a slow fan.

stwp 1 lower res on pics there huge :)

second get all thoes wires away from your CPU. the reason your temps are so high is because the wires are ovber the CPU fan and it cant get good cooling. bundel them together and move them to the corner away from the CPU. that will help immensly. rounder IDE cables will help also just make sure you get long ones so there not stretching over teh CPU.

I would take as much of the excess cable as I could and tuck it above or inbetween the cd rom drives. Then I would take the side panel off, cut a 120mm hole right across from the CPU and bolt in a 120mm Panaflo running at half speed. That's what I did and it dropped my temps like 8 degrees. Very quiet too.

You don`t need a side fan in a Lian Li to cool an XP1800 even with a GlobalWin FOP32-1 on (not even up to 1800+ spec) and the Alpha is far better than that!. but that wiring is scary, you can barely SEE the HS/Fan!.. Here is a pic of the inside of mine, I took this a while back to show the success Cable rounding

Inside mine with the old HS/Fan

Here`s a link to the cable rounding info..

Link here

Mine is now Idling at 33 Deg-C in the same case with an AX-7 / YS-Tech 3000RPM fan at 70degrees-F room temp though I HAVE replaced the crap AddA exhaust fan for a Thermaltake 3000RPM job and replaced the punch out vent with a wire grille, the pic here also shows how clear the insides are :)

Wow witchfinder...That is indeed a very neat and tidy looking inside of a case! Good job!

Witchfinder, are u aware that you can place your hard drives vertically, inside the compartment behind the intake fans? that way the incoming air can cool your harddrive as well.

Cliftonite, you definately have the right idea by ordering the round ribbon cables, but you need to focus some attention on those hard-drives. I would $bet$ they are contributing in a large way to your excess heat issue. Not only do they (!4!) create a lot of heat, but their mass will restrict airflow as well. Unless you look to invest in another form of cooling besides forced air, you may never be satisfied(or cool). Remember: in general Athlons are hot creatures! But they rule...:D

Thanks Kglo :D rounding the cables really helps and are in a way better than the bought ones as they don`t try to rip the logic boards off your hard disks when you fold them away .. it would have been even neater if ECS hadn`t placed the IDE/Floppy headers in such a stupid place :(

Here`s a better pic I took yesterday to prove to a customer that the AX-7 would fit on a K7S5a before they had me order one...

Recent Case insides pic

ShinSa:- Yes I thought of that and it`s a great idea but even though they are 7200RPM, they don`t get too hot (unlike the old Seagate Barracudas which used to get to silly temps) and the aluminium frame acts like a heatsink in itself, mounting them under the floppy allows all the cool air to get to the system easier letting me run the twin fans at medium or even slow speed, I would imagine that a pair of old Barracudas in that bay would actually heat UP the system :D

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions. Once i get the rounded cables, ill start to clean this mess up and put up the after pictures :D . Also do you guys think that i should change my heatsink? I have the Alpha 6035 and it can only use 60mm fans. Should i get a larger heatsink so that i can use a bigger fan (an 80). And is there a site where i can find what heatsinks are compatible with my mobo? I looked at epoxs site and they did not have anything. Thanks again.

I`d recommend the 8045, the Swiftech 462 and of course the AX-7 picture linked in my previous post (with a YS-Tech fan on), IMO the AX-7 is the bargain amongst them.. If I remember rightly, you have to be careful about it catching the Northbridge and a transistor on the 8KHA+, there is a thread on these forums somewhere about AX-7 compatibility, have a read of that :)

Oh, and best of luck with the tidying - the first thing to do is to get all the powersupply excess wiring up top behind the CD-ROMS with cable ties, get the excess IDE cabling folded together and tucked under the drives or to the side and it might be wise to replace that crap AddA exhaust fan with something which actually moves air (a Panaflo A12H is quiet, reliable and therefore ideal) - I would leave off the exhaust fan's inside rear grille too as it impedes airflow more than you`d think..

Thanks for the tip withcfinder. Ill look into the 8045 and the AX-7. The only Adda fan that i have is the one on the heatsink. The rest are panaflos. And thanks again for the tips :)
